A Challenging Year?
We are often asked how the industry fared last year. The results vary by region and market segment. The overall improvement in the economy seemed to benefit most of the companies in the Rocky Mountain states. Diversified companies did much better in 2013, which was a challenging year for some due to inclement weather and the government shutdown. Outfitters from the midwest to the eastern seaboard endured a summer of relentless rain and cool weather which did not improve until August. Many companies in this region saw declines in revenues north of 10%. "Even with 2012" year was probably an above average outcome for 2013 in this neck of the woods. One company described it this way, "We have been in business for 45 years and have grown every year but two. One year was a drought emergency and the other year was 2013." Colorado, which faced a dismal snowpack at the start of the season and early fires, benefited from summer rains. With the rain also came some flooding which damaged several businesses in the Fort Collins area. Vista Verde Guest Ranch lost a number of cabins due to the flooding, but they vow they will be back. California also faced water challenges due to low snowpack and fires. The Kern was lost for most of the season in part due to snowpack and repairs to the upstream dam. Still a number of dammed controlled rivers, such as the Tuolumne and South Fork of the American were runnable for most of the season. The Southwest in general was very dry. Early winter snowstorms in this region are a cause for optimisim there. Over 32 AOA members operating on federasl lands reported losing a significant amount of business due to the government shutdown.
